Many lobe-finned fish, like Tiktaalik roseae [ Tik-TAH-lick ROW-zee-ay], had fins with such sturdy bones that they could use them to pull themselves onto land! The lobe-finned fish of the Devonian Period were on their way to becoming the first tetrapods —the four-legged land-dwelling animals that would eventually include amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals, and you.

During the Carboniferous Period (358 million years ago), fish and tetrapods filled Earth’s fresh waters, but some evolved adaptations to leave the water behind. They grew hard scales instead of soft skin, laid hard-shelled eggs, and had strong limbs for walking and running. By the Permian Period (300 million years ago), amphibians and reptiles had taken over the land. One group of these new scaly vertebrates—the synapsids—would give rise to mammals.
